Key takeaways
- The price on the box is not the price. On Ring and Blink, saved video and person alerts sit behind a monthly plan. Over a few years the plan usually costs more than the doorbell.
- Pay once: eufy, Tapo and Reolink record to a card you own, with no monthly fee on their listings.
- Best no-fee overall: Reolink Video Doorbell with Home Hub Mini £184.28 — footage lives on a hub inside the house, not in the doorbell.
- Budget no-fee: Tapo TD21 £44.97 — 2K, free person and package alerts, microSD.
- Easiest if you accept a plan: Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K £79.99. Best app and Alexa integration.
- Watch the Blink bundles: the Sync Module Core that comes in many of them does not do local storage. Blink says so in its own help pages.
A video doorbell is cheap to buy and easy to keep paying for. The two biggest names on Amazon UK, Ring and Blink, are both Amazon companies, and both sell the hardware for not much and then charge monthly for the part most people actually want: being able to go back and watch what happened. The other way to do it is a doorbell that records to a memory card you own. Less polish, no bill.
This guide is about that choice. It does not test anything: everything below comes from the manufacturers' listings and help pages, and you can check each line yourself. If you also want cameras round the side of the house, our outdoor security cameras guide uses the same logic, and the smart home starter guide covers how a doorbell fits with Alexa or Google.
TL;DR
- No monthly fee, footage kept indoors: Reolink Video Doorbell with Home Hub Mini £184.28
- No monthly fee, cheapest: Tapo TD21 £44.97
- No monthly fee, chime included: eufy C30 with Chime 2 £64.99
- Easiest, if a plan is fine: Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K £79.99 or the wired version £59.00 if your house has doorbell wiring.
- Renting with a peephole: the Ring Peephole Camera 2K £79.99

Ring: the easy one, with a monthly bill
The Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K is the one most people end up with, and for good reason. It goes up in minutes, the app is the most finished of the lot, and an Echo Show at home turns into a door screen with no fuss. Video is 2K with up to 6x digital zoom, and night vision is in colour where there is some light.
Without a plan it is a live camera and a motion ping: you see the door when you open the app or when it rings, and that is it. Ring's own listing puts saved video (up to 180 days) and person alerts in the subscription. The plan has been called Ring Protect and Ring Home, and the tiers have been renamed more than once, so read the current one on Ring's site. The basic tier covers one device; the higher tiers cover every device at one address.
Two things to know about the battery model. The battery is built in: to charge it you take the whole doorbell off the wall with the tool in the box and plug it in over USB-C, so the door goes unwatched while it charges. And a battery doorbell does not ring your existing chime: you hear it on your phone, an Echo, or a Ring Chime (sold with it in some bundles).
If your house already has a doorbell circuit, the Ring Wired Video Doorbell 2K £59.00 removes the battery problem. Same camera, no recharging. Check the supply first: Ring's UK help pages give 8 to 24 VAC for its wired doorbells, and many British homes have a battery chime with no transformer at all. In that case you need a transformer fitted (an electrician job) or a plug-in adapter, which turns a ten-minute install into something else.
Blink: cheaper, longer battery, read the box
The Blink Battery Doorbell 2K+ £69.99 runs on three AA lithium cells, which Blink rates for months, so there is no taking it off the wall to charge. 2K, head-to-toe view, IP65.
The catch is in the hub. Blink doorbells need a Sync Module, and this listing ships with the Sync Module Core. Blink's own FAQ says Local Storage and Clip Backup are not available for the Core; it saves clips to the cloud with a Blink subscription. Person detection is a plan feature too. If you want Blink without a plan, you need a Sync Module 2 (USB stick) or Sync Module XR (microSD), and you should check Blink's compatibility list for your doorbell before buying. There is also a cheaper listing of the same doorbell without any Sync Module: it will not work on its own.
No monthly fee: eufy, Tapo, Reolink
Reolink Video Doorbell with Home Hub Mini
The Reolink doorbell with Home Hub Mini is our pick for no-fee because of where the footage lives. It records to a microSD card in the hub, which sits inside the house (card sold separately, up to 1 TB). If someone pulls the doorbell off the wall, the recording of them doing it is still indoors. The camera is 4MP with a square 1:1 frame, so you see a parcel on the step and a face at the same time. It runs on battery (Reolink claims up to 10 months, based on five minutes of recording a day) or on 8-24 VAC doorbell wiring, which keeps the battery topped up. People, vehicle, animal and parcel detection run locally, with no plan.
Tapo TD21
The Tapo TD21 is the cheapest way to get recordings without a bill. 2K 3MP, a wide 160-degree view, colour night vision with a spotlight, and free alerts for people, vehicles, pets and parcels. It records to a microSD card up to 512 GB, with Tapo Care cloud as an option, not a requirement. The 6,400 mAh battery is rated for about 180 days, and a chime is in the box. The card sits in the doorbell, so if the doorbell goes, so does the card.
eufy C30 with Chime 2
The eufy C30 treats a ring like a phone call: a pop-up with live video, and quick replies or a voice message if you are out. It records to a microSD card up to 128 GB (not included), and it can also store to a eufy HomeBase S380, sold separately, if you want the footage indoors. The chime comes in the box, which saves a purchase most first-time buyers forget.
Renting? Check the peephole first
Drilling into a front door frame you do not own is a conversation with the landlord. The Ring Peephole Camera 2K replaces an existing peephole on doors 32.5 to 60 mm thick, with no drilling or wiring, and the battery pack comes out for charging. It is a Ring, so the subscription logic above applies.
Things the marketing doesn't tell you
- Free person alerts are not universal. Tapo and Reolink advertise person and parcel detection with no plan. On Ring and Blink, person detection is listed as a subscription feature. Without it, a battery doorbell on a busy street pings you for every passing car or drains its battery doing so.
- Card in the doorbell means card leaves with the doorbell. Local storage is only as safe as where the card sits. A hub indoors (Reolink, or eufy with a HomeBase) fixes that; a card in the doorbell does not.
- Two listings, one doorbell, one of them useless on its own. Blink sells the same doorbell with and without a Sync Module. The cheaper one needs a module you may not have.
- Wired does not mean plug and play in the UK. Many British doorbells are battery chimes with no transformer. Check before you buy a wired model.
- Your camera, your data duties. A doorbell that records the pavement or a neighbour's path falls under UK GDPR, the same as a camera. Our outdoor cameras guide explains what that means in practice.
- Subscriptions change; hardware does not. Plan names, prices and features have changed several times. A doorbell that records locally does today what it will do in three years.
Verdict
If a monthly bill is fine and you live with Alexa: Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K, or the wired one if your house is ready for it. Budget the plan in from day one.
If it is not: the Reolink with Home Hub Mini for footage kept indoors, or the Tapo TD21 as the cheapest way in. Both record without a plan and alert you to people for free.

FAQ
Does a Ring doorbell work without a subscription?
Yes, but only as a live camera. You get motion alerts, live view and two-way talk. Saved recordings, and alerts that tell a person from a car, are in the Ring subscription according to Ring's own listing. If you want to rewatch what happened, budget for the plan or buy a doorbell that records to a card.
Which video doorbells have no monthly fee?
Of the ones in this guide: eufy C30, Tapo TD21 and Reolink with Home Hub Mini. All three record to a microSD card you buy once. Tapo also offers an optional cloud plan. Blink can record locally too, but only with a Sync Module 2 or XR, not the Sync Module Core that many bundles include.
Will a video doorbell ring my existing chime?
Battery models usually do not: they alert your phone and, if you have one, an Echo or a matching plug-in chime. That is why eufy, Tapo and some Ring bundles put a chime in the box. Wired doorbells use the house circuit, but whether the old chime keeps working depends on the model and the wiring.
Can I fit a video doorbell if I rent?
A battery doorbell needs a few screws in the frame, so ask the landlord. If your door has a peephole, a peephole camera such as Ring's swaps in with no drilling and comes out again when you leave.
Is it legal to record the street with a doorbell in the UK?
Yes, but if the camera captures beyond your property, such as the pavement or a neighbour's path, UK GDPR applies to you. In practice: angle it to capture as little as you need, use privacy zones, keep footage only as long as needed, and tell people it is recording. The ICO has guidance for domestic CCTV.
